Recap of Side Saddle Races at Willowdale (PA) and Potomac (MD)!

Congratulations to all of the riders who raced at the Willowdale Races on Sun, 14 May, and the Potomac Hunt Races on Sun, 21 May!

Miss Nancy Nichols Memorial Race at Willowdale

The amazing two mile course included ten 3' timber fences, most of which had been built specifically for this event, thanks to the generosity of Dixon Stroud, founder of the Willowdale Steeplechase and board member of Mr. Stewart's Cheshire Foxhounds (PA). All the ladies who raced at Willowdale also hunt regularly, and came from as far as St. Louis, MO as well as Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. The top three finishers also qualified for the famous Dianas of the Chase race in Leicestershire, England, at the beginning of December. The 8 ladies covered the 2 miles on soft-to-good ground at a good clip in 4:59 2/5. In Todd We Trust set the pace and led the majority of the race until he tired and was overtaken at the last fence by the top three horses. The winner, McCrady's, won going away by 6 lengths. It was an incredibly exciting race, and the spectators and representatives from the National Steeplechase Association were thrilled! The results were:

  1. McCradys, ridden by Julie Nafe, owned and trained by Lauren Shock
  2. Fort Henry, ridden/owned/trained by Step hanie Dowling
  3. El Pegaso (Finn McCool), ridden/owned/trained by Sarah Martin
  4. In Todd We Trust, ridden by Devon Zebrovious, trained by George Kuk, owned by Cherry Blossom Farm
  5. Galon Hapus, ridden by Becca Barker, owned and trained by Lauren Shock

Many thanks to all at Willowdale for allowing us to run over their beautiful and challenging course, and a huge thank you to all prize donors and volunteers who assisted in making this such a huge success and crowd pleaser. Finally, thank you to SSCF Race Chair Kirstie Grabosky for all of her hard work to organize the side saddle race at Willowdale.

Susan Moran Side Saddle Race at Potomac Hunt Races

We couldn't have asked for a better day with mostly cloudy skies and mid-60s temps, perfect for the comfort of horse and rider. Potomac's renowned hospitality was on full display as 8 riders/horses raced on good ground over in a mile in 1:42 flat! The Gingerbread Man set the pace with a brilliant start into the first turn, and then it was a battle around the backside for the lead, with the top five placing horses in a tight group heading into the stretch. At the wire, it was a photo finish between Reddington and In Todd We Trust! After a review of the tape, the results were announced, and they were:

  1. In Todd We Trust, ridden by Devon Zebrovious, trained by George Kuk, owned by Cherry Blossom Farm
  2. Reddington, ridden/owned by Bernadette Boland, trained by George Kuk
  3. King of Hearts, ridden by Sarah Hansard, trained by George Kuk, owned by Cherry Blossom Farm
  4. Easy to Say No, ridden by Aurora Munyan, owned/trained by Lisa Munyan
  5. The Gingerbread Man, ridden/trained by Kathryn Colwes, owned by Greystone Farm
  6. Always Elegant, ridden by Dillyn Ketterman-Millnick, trained by Jackie McClintick, owned by Ketterman Jeweler's
  7. Patrick, ridden/trained by Sarah O'Halloran, owned by Dr. and Mrs. Peter O'Halloran
  8. Tilly, ridden by Andrew Camp, owned/trained by Russell E. Shifflett, Jr.
  • Best Turned Out - King of Hearts & Sarah Hansard
  • Best Conditioned TB - Reddington & Bernadette Boland
  • Best Conditioned Non-TB - Tilly & Andrew Camp

Thank you so much to the Potomac Hunt for holding such a fantastic flat race; to the generous sponsors of the race, ribbons, and awards; to Jill Howson for the lovely tailgate afterwards; to Maggie Johnston and Robin Somers-Strom for checking-in everyone; and to Sarah O'Halloran for organizing the race (and the amazing strawberry trifle)!

At the Potomac Hunt Races, it was a photo finish at the wire between Reddington/Bernadette Boland and In Todd We Trust/Devon Zebrovious. In Todd We Trust just edged out Reddington by a neck. (c) Photo by Middleburg Photo
